To read the Mifare® Classic, certain keys are required, this is for protecting the owner against
abuse. The reading-keys are known by the suppliers of self service equipement, they use
Mifare® readers along with the keys in order to read the passes. Unlike the tags in the media,
the Mifare® tags are only readable at short distances. The maximum distance for the majority
of the Mifare® readers is approximatly 8 cm. Thus the owner is required to hold the pass
consciousely in front of the Mifare® reader in order to identify with the self service equipment.
For the library industry the Mifare® Classic will be most commenly used. This type can contain
sufficient data needed to identify the owner.
There are several different types of Mifare® RFID tags available.
            - Mifare® Classic 1 Kbyte
            - Mifare® Standard 4 Kbyte
            - Mifare® Ultralight 512 Kbyte
These RFID passes are applied for user identification. The Library pass with only a barcode
will be succeeded by a pass the size of a credit card, this pass holds an RFID chip with the
standards mentioned above. The Mifare® pass contains more information then the I·CODE
SLI label. This alows the saving of the owners name. Advertisement possibilities also come
within reach. The Mifare® pass is not only disigned for libraries, in the future it should be
possible to visit museums with it.
